ABOUT SBCT CIVIC THEATRE EDUCATION

Who are we?

At Civic Theatre Education (CTE) our theatre training program is all about process. Our goal is to foster a respect for collaboration and ensemble work as well as teach students skills they can take with them as they audition for productions here at SBCT, for their school productions, and beyond. We strive to offer students a wide variety of courses designed to expose them to all aspects of theatrical production onstage and backstage, thereby enhancing their appreciation of the total collaborative experience. All students start at Level I classes. Students may advance to Level II once they have taken at least two Level I classes with us, have a recommendation from teachers and approval from the Education Director. Even students with experience in productions must start with Level I classes. Any exception made to the above rules will be handled at the discretion of the Director of Education
Creative Dramatics: K - 1st grade

Creative Drama offers our youngest students a chance to explore and express ideas and feelings though dramatic enactment. The children will experience movement, voice, and acting in guided activities and theatre games. This process aids students in language development, communication skills, and creativity, as well as building self-esteem, empathy, and group co-operation. Creative Drama classes are designed for beginning and returning student and cover new material each session.
Ensemble Players - 2nd and 3rd grades

Level I classes are where students learn foundational theatre and acting skills by exploring the elements of a story, improvisation, and characterization. Each week students build on theatrical terminology, creative thinking and team work. Level I is designed for students new to theatre classes.

Level II classes build on students' knowledge of theatre fundamentals in acting, characterization, theatrical terminology, and continue to build on their improv skills. In Level II students are introduced to vocal techniques for both speaking and singing as well as movement for the stage.
Intermediate Drama - 4th thru 6th grades

Level I classes introduce and review theatrical techniques and terminology. Basic concepts are presented through the use of exercises and improvisation. Students develop the skills and freedom necessary to react spontaneously and honestly moment to moment.

Level II classes are where students expand their knowledge of acting skills, voice and movement for the stage, and characterization. They work in depth with scripted scenes and monologues. The process of script analysis is introduced and students broaden their knowledge of acting as they approach material that makes increased demands on their physical, vocal, and imaginative resources

Teen Conservatory Workshops - grades 7th thru 12th

Our Teen Conservatory workshop sessions offer beginning students an opportunity to explore theatre though an introductory process and offers advanced students seminars and practicum in theatre concentrations. These unique classes are designed for students to find their own artistic voice in a collaborative and creative environment. Workshops will vary every semester and cover a wide variety of topics.
