A season of excitement, change, and new opportunities for Phoenix Theatre closes with a production mirroring those very qualities. Cry It Out by Molly Smith Metzler follows the burgeoning friendship of two brand new mothers and their new parent-neighbors up the hill. The joys and chaos of raising a baby come into full view with touching and heartbreaking reality-all from the cozy backyard of a Long Island suburb.
Long-time resident stage manager Chelsey Stauffer makes her directing debut with this production. Deftly crafted to mirror the restlessness inherent in the piece, Stauffer pulls together strong design work and nuanced acting to create a balanced and fascinating world. A young mother herself, Stauffer provides insight and experience to this profound story-similar to that of her actors. Both Lauren Briggeman and Sally Scharbrough have infants at home, just like their characters. Michael Hosp and Andrea Heiden round out the cast as wealthy parents with distinct problems of their own. Four of the best actors in the city play in a well-designed space, courtesy of scenic design by Daniel Uhde, lighting design by Zac Hunter, sound design by Ben Dobler, and costume/properties design by Danielle Buckel. New mothers, fathers, and baby-free patrons alike will dive headfirst into this tale of the silent suffering and exuberant triumph that goes along with raising a child.
