Buck Creek Players (BCP), the award-winning all-volunteer community theater on the southeast side of Indianapolis, is today announced the 39th season of quality theater, In the Spotlight, as they present six entertaining productions for 2012-2013.
Opening our season will be Tom Rooney's high energy farce, Flaming Idiots. Carl and Phil know that big money is waiting for people with entrepreneurial spirit and sound business judgment. They open a gourmet restaurant with much vim and vigor, but have absolutely no idea what they are doing. A popular spot across town has been crowded ever since a notorious mobster was shot there over twenty years ago! What if someone could get murdered in their restaurant? Winner of the 1992 New American Comedy Festival Award, Bernard Wurger will make his Buck Creek Players directorial debut as this crazy comedy hits the stage for two weekends September 21-30, 2012.
Celebrate the holiday season with BCP as they present A Little Christmas Spirit by Pat Cook. J.D. Morse has been looking high and low for a special Christmas gift for his grandson. Finally, he wanders into Nick's Emporium, an old-fashioned store chock full of all sorts of gifts and knick-knacks. He has a hard time explaining to Nick what he's looking for, but finds himself falling under the old storekeeper's spell. This Yuletide fantasy is full of holiday spirit and humor and makes us all wish we could find "Nick's Emporium," where life stands still and we can all truly enjoy a little Christmas spirit. Ken Kern returns to direct this holiday greeting for the entire family for its three weekend run, November 30-December 16, 2012.
Spend an unforgettable night this winter in the Upper Peninsula without the long drive up north as BCP presents Escanaba in da Moonlight, a comedy by Jeff Daniels. When the Soady clan reunites for the opening day of deer season, 35-year-old Reuben brings with him the infamous reputation of being the oldest Soady in family history to never bag a buck. In the hunting story to beat all hunting stories, Escanaba in da Moonlight spins a hilarious tale of humor, horror, and heart as Reuben goes to any and all lengths to remove himself from the wrong page of the family record book. John Carver returns to direct the hunting story of all hunting stories as it plays for two weekends, January 25-February 3, 2013.
As spring flowers bloom, so will the relationships in Lisa Cripps' original comedy, Gender Soufflé. Kaye is single and looking...for a roommate, that is. Enter Harris Moore, a professor looking for a place to settle while continuing his research on "The Sociology of Gender." Could an attraction be building between the two, in spite of their staunch differences of opinion on the opposite sex? Or will they kill each other first? Other characters show up, adding extra spice to the soufflé,that...well...
you'll just have to see for yourself. Lea Viney will direct when the quirky comedy performs its two weekend run, March 29-April 7, 2013.
The Playhouse will take a trip back in time as BCP presents the Cy Coleman, David Zippel, and Larry Gelbart musical, City of Angels. Set in the glamorous and seductive Hollywood of the 1940's, this ingenious musical spoof of the classic film noir whodunit films tells side-by-side stories about the "real" world of a detective fiction writer and the "reel" world of his fictional gumshoe hero. One balances romance and rewrites, while the other sidles through a film noir netherworld of vicious thugs and femmes fatales. Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, D. Scott Robinson returns to direct the fun for three weekends, June 7-23, 2013.
Join us in the summer of 2013 for our fifth biennial Play-A-Part Fundraiser where YOU are the star! All roles in in Rogers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by an online silent auction. This time, it's The Farmer vs. the cowboy, and a classic story of true love in the Oklahoma territory of the early 1900's. Be sure to join us (either on stage or in the audience) August 2-4, 2013, and discover why these fundraisers, given a comedic interpretation similar to The Carol Burnett Show, have become an audience favorite since Director D. Scott Robinson first began raising funds for The Playhouse with them in 2005!
Buck Creek Players began in 1973 when the Franklin Township Civic League formed a committee to present performing arts under the name of "Four C's Theatre." On November 13, 1974, the name was changed to Buck Creek Players, Inc., and was formalized under the Indiana Not-for-Profit Corporation Act of 1971 (501(c)3).
Initially, Buck Creek Players performed in elementary and high schools, and in October of 1978, moved to its first home, a historic church located at 7820 Acton Road. The church was built in 1872 with an addition in 1952. The main space of the building was the sanctuary which was 31 feet wide by 48 feet deep, with the stage using one-half of the space and the seating using the other half. The space enabled BCP to offer performing arts in an intimate setting for a maximum of 90 people. In 2002, the church was sold to United Faith Baptist Church.
In 2001, Buck Creek Players moved into its current home, the Buck Creek Playhouse, at 11150 Southeastern Avenue on the southeast side of Marion County. The current space was originally built as an indoor tennis facility that was later converted into a church. Much of the space was rebuilt to accommodate the productions it would now house. While increasing capacity, the space is still intimate, seating a maximum of 130 people.
