Majuli, the river island on the Brahmaputra in Assam has been a source of inspiration for the dancer, Shilpika Bordoloi, trained in Bharatanatyam, Manipuri and the Martial Arts. Influenced by the beauty of the island and the social, cultural, spiritual life of the people living in Majuli, Shilpika has created a new performance, Majuli, through the movement and vocabulary of dance and theatre.
The island Majuli is shrinking rapidly due to the constant floods and soil erosion and would cease to exist in next few decades. The natural, built and intangible heritage of Majuli is an irreplaceable asset to the north-east region that provides deep insight into its past.
Through the medium of this performance, Shilpika weaves together the aspects of movement, voice, light, music, costume and set design to share the story of Majuli and the river Brahmaputra.
