The event has been organized as a tribute to the eminent vocalist Kumar Gandharva (1924-92) on his 90th birth anniversary.
A trail-blazing musician, Kumar Gandharva has a unique place in the 20th-century history of Indian music. In a musical milieu heavily influenced by gharana ideology, he was a nonconformist who not only rejected puritanism, but made bold attempts at assimilating elements from contemporary as well as folk musical traditions, creating an eclectic universe of new ragas and compositions rendered in an inimitable style that continues to inspire young musicians.
Kalapini and Bhuvanesh Komkali, daughter and grandson respectively of the maestro, will present highlights from the maestro’s musical journey, spanning the vast canvas of his musical compositions in traditional ragas, jod-ragas, folk forms and devotional bandishes.
Swanand Kirkire’s commentary will highlight special characteristics of the compositions.
