Rare, Unusual, Marvellous and Wonderful, (the meaning of SELCOUTH) is exactly what one can expect with this upcoming show. The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), India's premier arts and culture institution brings an electrifying contemporary dance show "Selcouth"by Shiamak Davar's Dance Company which includes graduates from his one-year dance certification programme on Friday, January 17 atJamshedBhabha Theatre. Public figures such as Shahid Kapoor and Raj Thackeray are expected to attend this event.
Selcouth is a blend of Indo-contemporary and modern dance with a strong ballet base. This performance is an illustrative perspective of what life is all about, showcasing almost everything right from dance, drama, love, humour, horror to curiosity. The ShiamakDavar Dance Company is all geared up to bring life to Shiamak's vision of things we do not see, places we fear to visit and situations that make us wary, through contemporary dance movement.
With ballet, it is the gracefulness of movement, achieved through that muscled physique, which is noteworthy. Retaining the strength and technique of contemporary ballet, Selcouth rips the frills and tutus off the dancers. With nothing left to distract one's attention, the audience will be compelled to focus on the dance. Selcouth challenges the way dance is perceived in India. With a style bordering on the Bauhaus philosophy of 'form following function', each dancer has a specific role - from being as passive as a prop to being as aggressive as a character in a frenzy.
On their association with NCPA, ShiamakDavar says"The response to Selcouth has been overwhelming all through 2013 and I'm glad it's taking place at JamshedBhabha now. NCPA has been supporting performing arts and has been a platform for performers to showcase their talent. It has always been a pleasure performing and choreographing on this stage."
"We are proud to be associated with the ShiamakDavarDance Company. Shiamak, known for mentoring technically and theoretically flawless dancers will be presenting a very different form of dance. It will be extremely exciting and wonderful to see the younger generation from his company, brimming with energy to perform and set the stage on fire."says Swapnokalpa Dasgupta, Head Programming, Dance, NCPA.
About the show and the social message it carries, Shiamak says "The show has members of my Dance Company and graduates from my one year dance certification program. With the right training and guidance, this is the magic that can be created. I hate any kind of violence, against animals, women and humanity. But we need to get empowered now, women who are being harassed must speak up. We need to put an end to this."
