Laughter Therapy when it was first shown in theaters last year, it drew a great response. A comedy play is something that theatre goers have increasingly stressed that India needs more and Laughter Therapy works towards filling up that space. A Silly point Productions the play that is written and directed by Meherzaad Patel, stars actor Mona Singh of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi fame.
Singh plays Dr Bombay in the play who is a therapist. Touching the sometimes discordant faith issues, the therapist has for her patients a Hindu, a Muslim, a Parsi and a Christian. She deals with their mental issues but what remains riveting to watch is that she plays 7 different characters on stage. Each role that she portrays from an old Goan lady to that of a police officer, convincingly evokes humor while making a point.
It is not very often on live stage that as whopping 35 characters are introduced in one play. The challenge becomes even more insurmountable when 5 characters have to portray that role. The credit for this must go to director Meherzaad Patel who managed to get his lead actors straddle so many roles without the play looking repetitive or boring deserves an accolade.
Next time, the play is on in your city do catch it for some unadulterated laughter.
