It's not unusual on an Indian stage to find stories that transport you to another era. Stories that are a replica of ancient times and remind us of our vast history. But when a story from a bygone era manages to resonate with the current times, then when can say that it is a story well told.
Thats' the kind of feeling you get after viewing the spectacular Ek Tha Raja by Indian Revival Group. But what remains also deeply gratifying is that you walk out of the theatre learning a bit more about a forgotten hero. A hero who should have been revered. Tghe play follows the story of Gopaldas Ambai Das Desai or popularly known as Darbar Sahab. Darbar Sahab was the ruler of Dhasa in Saurashtra, Gujarat.
Interestingly he was the first ruler who gave up his principality to oppose the British rule. Yog Sunder Desai and Papiha Desai have grippingly presented this story in a dance drama format. So, a lot of comprehension happens through gestures, actions and expressions. It also keeps the audiences totally engaged into the story line. The raja was a man of extraordinary grace and refused to bow down to the British. As a ruler he feklt that his rights were violated and made the tough but dignified decision to relocate to Borsad along with his family. The mighty raja now took the role of a political activist and organized many movements.
The story told through the craft of dancing effectively showcases the times in all their glory and the magnitude of dilemma the rule faced.
It is a must watch for those who are interested in understanding Navrasa, an effective form of story telling.
