Ramlila festivities back in 2008 were declared by UNESCO as one of the 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.' Every year during the month of Navratras, stages in India come alive with re-enactment of the life of Hindu God Rama. Ramlila that is famous in cities of Ayodhya, Varanasi and Vrindavan attracts visitors from near and far cities. But a unique Ramlila in Delhi that is said to be the oldest has been successfully wowing the audience for past 62 years. Called Sampoorna Ramlila, now running in its 62nd consecutive year, this Ramlila with all its traditional finery is performed at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, a major cultural centre in Delhi. Produced and directed by Mrs. Shobha Deepak Singh, director, Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra the presentation is famous all over India for its fine choreography, great lighting, sound and music, costumes, ornamentation and animation. The Ramlila on stage gives a perfect feeling of watching a live play on stage, albeit from a different era.
The tradition of Ramlila that is derived from the Hindu epic text dates back to 1st millennium BCE. Most stage presentations are derived from the very important 16th century text called Ramcharitmanas by Tulasidas. The presentations often keep the dialogues and adptations quite in sync with the olden texts.
The Sampoorna Ramlila at Shriram Kala Kendra continues to enthrall the audiences over the years probably because it has that old world charm to it. So, during the navratras if you are done visiting the pandals in your neighborhood, do check out this grand Ramlila. Chances are you will chalk it down to a great experience.
