Part of encouraging millennial trends in India is also an increasing awareness about LGBTQ community. A host of new events, shows and programs are being organized to give the LGBT community an opportunity to participate and also to create a sense of sensitivity amongst the masses.
Joining this crusade, this month is NCPA, the premier theatre destination in Mumbai. NCPA has tied up with Kali Billi Productions to present Sangeet Bari to mark the Pride Month.
What is unique about the event is that there will be a performance of Lavani. Lavani is a relatively lesser known but an important part of Maharashtrian cultural heritage. Though not popularly seen in mainstream the form has often been shown as item numbers. However, this presentation would try to bring back the glory to this art form as artists will regale the audiences with a gender-fluid performance. The unique thing about Lavani is that it is a highly interactive dance form thus making it a perfect presentation for stage. The artist and the audience are engaged directly as the performer through abhinaya, dance and emotions converses with the audience.
The Lavani performances will be by artists Anand Satam and Ashimik Kamthe. The organizers promise to bring a contemporary face of this traditional form which can likely become a trend.
