A solo Bharatnatyam performance by world-renowned dancer and Padma Sri recipient Geeta Chandran titled Anekanta will be held to mark the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. The event that will be organized at Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts (IGNCA) on April 9 in New Delhi will be preceded by a lecture - The Colors of Desire on the Canvas of Restraint: The Jaina Way by Sudhamani Reghunathan.
The solo dance performance by Ms Chandran in especially relevant because it unfolds many significant truths about the medium. While it depicts a fascinating amalgamation of a classical form of dance with philosophy but it becomes more eye opening as the dancer has chosen Jaina philosophy to showcase her medium. Jainism a sect of belief, with strict rules has often been construed as very principled and devoid of rasa. The danseuse aims to show that mood through her performance.
The performance is promised to be powerful not just because it is showcasing an alternate side of a belief but also because it is a silent protest to aim for a peaceful society. Non- violence forms the core of the performance.
The dance recital draws heavily from the teachings of Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of the Jainas.
