Interview: Actor Monika Misra of Balika Vadhu fame On Playing Sakubai In Nadira Babbar's Play ImageRenowned theater actress Nadira Zahir Babbar is out with a new play titled Sakubai. Written by Nadira herself, the play features TV and theatre actor Monika Misra playing the pivotal role of Sakubai

The comedy play is special because it is a solo performance by Monika Misra.

Misra chats with BWW on playing the solo part and how theatre and TV differ as mediums for an actor

BWW: We have been seeing women-centric plays for some time now.How and what influence you think they are on society.

MM: Women Centric plays gives voice to the untold stories of women, who do not openly speak in society. Sakubai is a very revolutionary drama in this category, which puts the problems of the women of different classes in front of the society.Sakubai is the story of a maid who is very talkative and funny by nature and spreads awareness among the audience while talking to them in a very humorous manner. Thereby, women in the society can get enough courage to raise voice for their rights and fight for it and can resist every evil, every tyranny against them strictly.

BWW: How different is the medium of TV from Stage?

MM: Stage has its own charm with both audience and actors . It is a medium that can never be replaced by any media such as TV,Films or Internet. It gives audience a pleasure to watch the show live and actors get vast scope of performance as they never get a second chance or retake. They get an instant response from audience. I found it really very interesting to play different characters in front of audience. Its real fun.

BWW: Tell us a bit more about Sakubai

MM: Sakubai is based on a Marathi woman's story which takes you to the journey of her whole life using broom in her hand to wipe out all the negativities in life.Shakuntala aka sakubai is the eldest daughter of Laxmi and Tukaram Jamde.Like others ,Shakuntala and her mother left their village and re-located to Mumbai in search of work and money. She sweeps, swabs, washes, cooks, takes care of our children, our pets and looks after our elderly. Sakubai sings, dances, cries gushes and impersonates different persons around her to reflect the double standards of urban society.
