Village Rockstars, a small budget film by a relatively not so popular director about a small girl from North East, was one of the most pleasant surprises of 2018. Rima Das' film which was India's official entry to Oscars, had everything that may have led to it getting a lukewarm notice but the film created unexpected ripples as the compelling story managed to touch the hearts. Even though the film could not make it to the final Oscar run, it put sensitive stories from India's North East on the world map.
Riding high on the success of Village Rockstars, Rima Das is back with her next, a film titled Bulbul Can Sing.
Following the new and encouraging trend of alternate cinema from India, getting attention at the global cinema forums, the film has already made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, 2018. The film is now on its run to be shown at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival 2019.
Charting the same heart-riveting route, this new film by Das also tells the story of a teenage girl from Assam. Bulbul, the young protagonist has dreams and she discovers her life and meaning through the passages of life.
While for any director it gets challenging to deliver a story that can create the same powerful connect after the first mega success, but director Rima Das admits that she has been both surprised and reassured by the same overwhelming response.
Bulbul Can Sing will be competing at the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 in Generation 14 Plus category.
