Kicking off its 16th season, Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company (MU) takes a trip through memory, perception, and grief with the Houston premiere of IN A WORD by award-winning playwright Lauren Yee.
Set two years after the disappearance of Fiona and Guy’s son Tristan, Yee’s poetic mystery play uses wordplay and the imperfection of memory to tell the story of a family wrecked by grief and attempting to re-assemble their lives. Absurdist imagery and a surreal plot combine with slippery meanings as both Fiona and Guy seek an answer to what happened that fateful day and how to move on.
"The textured layers and complex, sometimes comedic wordplay drew me in,” said Artistic Director Jennifer Decker on why she chose the play. “I was also very impressed with how much this young playwright has achieved so quickly in her career. Premiering her work in Houston seemed like the perfect way to launch our new season."
Lauren Yee, a San Francisco native who now resides in New York, has received several awards for her writing, including the Francesca Primus Prize from the American Theatre Critics Association and a Susan Smith Blackburn Prize nomination for IN A WORD. She is also a former MAP Fund grantee and fellow with the Dramatist’s Guild, the Edward F. Albee Foundation, and the MacDowell Colony.
