Interdisciplinary artist Vicki Fowler made the move from Chicago to Houston with her 2-year-old daughter. In the process of that move, she let go of 75 percent of her possessions. Because she was quite the collector, she says, it was a lot of stuff. That's when the piece - THE THINGS I NEED - began in her mind.
Several individuals whom Fowler has admired have been invited to share their efforts and response to their necessities in a live vignette this weekend. From these various perspectives comes a collection of spoken word, performance, dance and actions.
"THE THINGS I NEED comes from just figuring out what to let go of and what to keep in life, and boiling things down to just the bare-bone necessities," says Vicki Fowler. "In this work, I've invited people that I really have admired for a long time, old time Houston friends, and then there's a couple of newer friends - a new friend from Chicago. They're all coming to respond to the same question - the things they need."
Each person Fowler invited is doing their own response, in vignette form, on the subject of THE THINGS I NEED.
Fowler expects the audience to experience a wave of emotions. "Some of it is definitely going to be tongue in cheek [but] there will be some sincere moments, some connection between audience and the performers. Because there are so many different people responding to the question, it's going to take us on a ride."
