Visceral is a dance theater production choreographed by three female company members of Urban Souls Dance Company: Alexis Anderson, Lauren Burke, and Ladonna Matchett. Following his Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant Project, Between Worlds, an all- male exploration of black/gay identity, artistic director Harrison Guy extended the opportunity for his female company members to create a show of their own.

"Visceral is an exploration of female body imaging and its ideals," says Burke. "The show takes a look at what beauty has been defined as across culture and time while questioning the societal implications of how women are to look and behave. The effects of media and historic imagery will be showcased from our personal struggles and comforts."

The three choreographers will bring to the show their diverse movement experiences, including Modern dance technique, ballet, Africanist aesthetics, and minimalist motifs. The dance artists will also make use of the Pilot on Navigation's unique space by creating an interactive element in the outdoor patio. "Visceral is more than a sit-down and shut-up kind of show," explains Burke.

"It features a gallery of unconventional art, live music, and installations which the audience can experience throughout the space."

As beauty trends are ever-evolving, the audience is encourage to engage in an ongoing conversation about how cultural and societal ideals are created, transformed, and reinforced. FrenetiCore is excited to present Visceral as part of the Pilot's Artist-in- Residence Program, which offers selected artists/companies the opportunity to create an original full-length work in the space and present it for up to two weekends at the Pilot on Navigation.
