On August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in their home at 92 Second Street. Abby Borden suffered eighteen blows to her head by a hatchet-like instrument, with thirteen of the strikes crushing through her skull. She died in her upstairs bedroom. Approximately, an hour-and-a-half later, Andrew Borden suffered ten or eleven blows to the head from the same instrument. Four of these fatal strikes crushed his skull. He died in the family's sitting room.
According to the Bordens' maid, she was resting in her third-floor room when she heard Lizzie scream, "Maggie, come quick! Father's dead. Somebody came in and killed him" around 11:10am. Police were dispatched and started picking through the crime scenes for evidence. Certain clues, such as one of Andrew's eyeballs being split cleanly in two, suggest he was sleeping when he was attacked. Also, the police found a hatchet in the Borden's basement. It was free of blood, but was missing most of its handle.
Lizzie Borden, daughter of Andrew and Abby, was the only person whose whereabouts could not be confirmed during the murders. The Fall River police charged her as the leading suspect in the murders, and arrested her on August 11, 1892. Lizzie's trial began hearing evidence in New Bedford the following June, and became the most sensational trial of its time. On June 20, after deliberating for an hour and a half, the jury acquitted Lizzie Borden of all charges. To this day, the crime remains unsolved.
