A.D. Players, one of Houston's oldest and largest resident theater companies, has moved its troupe from the Grace Theater to its new 440-seat venue, the Jeannette and L.M. George Theater (George Theater). The Players completed its 39-year run at the 212-seat Grace Theater in December. To Kill a Mockingbird will be the first show performed at the new $18 million George Theater, just in time for the A.D. Players' 50th anniversary season. The American classic, dramatized by Christopher Sergel, runs February 12 - March 5, and is the first of six notable plays coming to the George Theater in 2017.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird contrasts the idyllic innocence of childhood with powerful themes of racial prejudice and injustice. The character of Atticus Finch, a lawyer who defends a man falsely accused of a crime, stars Jason Douglas, an established actor who has made regular appearances on the well-known hit television show, The Walking Dead. Additional actors include Callina Situka as Calpurnia and Jemma Kosanke as Scout.
"It is a joy to be able to open the Company's 50th season at our new theater with such an iconic play," said Jeannette Clift George, A.D. Players' founder and artistic director. "The artist, the theater, has the opportunity to be the speaker of good news in a time that desperately needs it. This new theater is a funnel from which good news can come, and I believe we as a people need that. I encourage all Houstonians to come out and see our new space and enjoy an evening or matinee performance of To Kill a Mockingbird."
The Jeannette and L.M. George Theater is located at 5420 Westheimer. Tickets can be purchased here or by calling the George Theater Box Office at 713.526.2721. Future performances include Charlotte's Web, You Can't Take It With You, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Godspell.
Founded in 1967 by Jeannette Clift George, A.D. Players pioneered a unique style of theater committed to producing plays and programs that uphold human value, offer creativity, and promote literacy and education. The company is one of Houston's largest resident theater companies, impacting more than nine million people over its lifetime.
