The Texas Repertory Theatre Co., NW Houston's critically acclaimed professional theatre begins its spring season with a sparkling production of James Goldman's brilliant theatrical classic, The Lion in Winter, opening January 24th and running through February 17th. Based on the history of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitane's marriage and rule, Goldman's play has become a classic of the modern theatrical canon, and was the basis for an award-winning 1968 film.
A legendary King and an incomparable Queen meet for one last Winter Court - and a battle that will determine the future of an empire. As the sun sets on his reign, Henry Plantagenet, "the greatest power in a thousand years," calls his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their three sons to Chinon, France for the negotiation of a treaty and a marriage contract. Locked behind the palace doors, a deadly game of alliances and betrayals unfolds as each of The Players, fueled by anger and old wounds, moves to control who will sit on throne when Henry is gone. Combining keen historical and psychological insight with delicious, mordant wit, The Lion in Winter is a not-to be missed theatrical event!
The Texas Repertory Theatre production of The Lion in Winter is directed by Julia Traber, and features a cast of Houston's finest actors, including Guest Artist Pamela Vogel, Sean Patrick Judge, Matt Hume, Matt Lentz, Caroline Menefee, and Texas Rep Artistic Director Steve Fenley.
