Stark Naked Theatre Company opens its fifth season with the Regional premiere of Bess Wohl's Small Mouth Sounds. Critics praised Small Mouth Sounds in its world premiere earlier this year, calling it "wry and observant" and "long on emotions." As Variety magazine noted in its review, "it's hard to say exactly when the shift happens - the silent, earth-moving switch from comedy to tragedy that makes this...play so moving. But when it does happen, it's shattering." Opening September 11th and running through September 26th at Stark Naked Theatre's STUDIO 101, Small Mouth Sounds will be directed by Kim Tobin-Lehl and features a strong ensemble cast that includes Tobin-Lehl, reunited on stage with Pamela Vogel, last seen in the critically acclaimed Stark Naked production of Annie Baker's Body Awareness.
Tobin-Lehl, who, along with Philip Lehl, founded Stark Naked and serve as the theatre's co- Artistic Directors, recently noted that "Philip and I are beyond thrilled to have been awarded the performance rights for the Regional premiere of Small Mouth Sounds. We immediately fell in love with this incredible play and its unique approach to storytelling when we saw the original New York production earlier this year. Not surprisingly, Small Mouth Sounds was enthusiastically embraced by both critics and audiences in its world premiere, and we are certain that Houston theatre-goers will likewise be enthralled with this extraordinary play."
Small Mouth Sounds is a hilarious, yet simultaneously thought-provoking and poignant story, focused on the interactions between six disparate strangers who meet at a silent yoga retreat. Selected as a coveted New York Times' Critics Pick, the play was described by NYT theatre critic Charles Isherwood as "enchanting", "moving" and "a model of ingenuity." Small Mouth Sounds was written by the immensely talented Bess Wohl, who recently won the 2015 Drama Desk Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award for "establishing herself as an important voice in New York theater, and having a breakthrough year with the eclectic American Hero, Pretty Filthy, and Small Mouth Sounds. Her writing expresses sensitivity, compassion, and humor with a sure hand."
