This morning, September 11, reports surfaced of a fire at the Alley Theatre in Houston, which is in the middle of a $46.5 million renovation. Around 100 firefighters were at the scene througout the day, and as of mid-afternoon, the fire had been contained.
The Alley Theatre announced on its Facebook page: "Shortly after 11:00 am today, there was a small fire in the Alley Theatre building, which is currently under construction. No one was in the building other than construction crew and everyone was safely evacuated. Houston Fire Department responded immediately to close the street and take control of the situation. This season's performances are at the University of Houston while the Alley Theatre is under renovation, so this fire will not affect the upcoming production of Dracula on October 3."
According to the Houston Chronicle, a construction worker saw flames and dialed 911 before ushering everyone from the building.
The fire was in the main building, and, according to Alley Theatre managing director Dean Glatten, was possibly caused by a spark during construction. No theater equipment was on site.
Glatten told the Chronicle he still expected the Alley Theatre to re-open as scheduled in October 2016.
