Marie Antoinette and Charlotte Corday walk into a bar. ... Okay, not exactly. But in Lauren Gunderson's whirling fantasia of a tale, THE REVOLUTIONISTS, the lives of four fiery, renegade women collide during the French Revolution. Main Street Theater (MST) opens its 2016 - 2017 MainStage season with the regional premiere of this irreverent, brutal comedy.
At the height of the Reign of Terror, playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, activist Marianne Angelle, and former queen Marie Antoinette plot murder, try to beat back extremist insanity in Paris, and explore how we actually go about changing the world. "It's a wonderfully theatrical (and hilarious) examination of humanity, fear, feminism, authority, and the power of storytelling," says MST founder and artistic director Rebecca Greene Udden.
THE REVOLUTIONISTS starts previews August 28, opens September 3, and continues through October 2 at Main Street Theater - Rice Village, 2540 Times Blvd. Performances are 7:30pm Thursdays through Saturdays; and 3 p.m. Sundays. $39 - $36. Previews are $10 - $15. For information, please call 713.524.6706 or visit MainStreetTheater.com.
