Monica Coronado, a senior at Aldine ISD's Carver High School, was awarded "Best in Show" for her piece titled "Goddess" in the 20th Annual Wells Fargo Student Art Contest presented by Society for the Performing Arts (SPA). Coronado's award-winning piece was one of 718 entries from more than 100 schools.
The contest was open to students in grades Pre-K through 12 in public and private schools and in after-school programs throughout the Greater Houston area. This year's theme, Storytellers, was inspired by SPA's performances of the cinematic shadow play Feathers of Fire. Student artists were tasked with sharing their personal stories through artwork that answered the question, What is your story?
In addition to the "Best in Show" award, six students received 1st place, six received 2nd place, six 3rd place, 34 were given honorable mentions, and four were honored with SPA Special Selection awards. Award categories included Division PK: Pre-K; Division A: grades Kindergarten-2; Division B: grades 3-5; Division C: grades 6-8; Division D: grades 9-11; and Division E: grade 12. Coronado and the other winners were recognized at an award ceremony on Sunday, April 29 at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. Prizes for this year's contest included thousands of dollars in cash rewards, art supplies, tickets to SPA performances and more.
