Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company (MU) is continuing its 2018-19 season with Cherise Castro Smith's THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE, playing March 28- April 6, 2019. Because Mildred's Umbrella lost its home at Chelsea Market Theatre recently, The Alley Theatre has generously allowed the production to be presented in their Neuhaus Theatre as a special one-time event.

Set at the turn of the century, after Christopher Columbus's return from the New World, HUNCHBACK is a madcap re-telling of Spanish history and the evils of colonialism. As Queen Isabella is dying, her brilliant and disfigured adopted sister, Maxima Terrible Segunda, is called in from her forced seclusion to run the county. Maxima then works her way through politics, religion and prejudice to save her country without sacrificing herself in the process.

A clever retelling of colonialism, combined with madcap bawdy humor, THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE is "16th-Century Spanish History as Written by Quentin Tarantino," according to Seattle's The Stranger, and Broadway World claims, "Though the story takes place on a cold day in 1504 Seville, it feels like a ray of sunshine-- perfect to thaw out your sense of humor and warm up your funny bone."

"After the success of audience favorite, FEATHERS AND TEETH last year, also by Cherise Castro Smith, we couldn't resist reading more of her scripts," said MU Artistic Director Jennifer Decker, "It makes a statement about colonialism and religion, while remaining hugely entertaining at the same time. Because of his background in commedia dell'arte and his experience with less mainstream scripts, Philip Hays stood out as a natural fit for director, and we are glad to have him on board for this one."

THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE runs March 28- April 6, 2018 at the Alley Neuhaus Theatre, 615 Texas Ave, Houston, TX 77002. Tickets are on sale now at www.mildredsumbrella.com. For more information, call 832-463-0409 or e-mail info@mildredsumbrella.com.
