Mercury Baroque opens its 11th season on Saturday, September 3rd at 8:00pm with Mozart Under the Stars, a free performance offering thousands of Houstonians the chance to enjoy beautiful, world-class music with their friends and families in the relaxed and informal ambience of the Miller Theatre. The performance is free to attend and no tickets are necessary. Covered seating will be offered on a first-come first-serve basis. More information can be found online at www.MercuryBaroque.org or by phone at (713) 533-0080.

Headlining this special concert under the stars is Mozart's famed Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, a lovely serenade for string orchestra and one of the most loved and recognizable pieces of classical music. Maestro Antoine Plante will also lead Mercury Baroque in Mozart's Serenata Notturna, a delightfully playful piece that showcases a rather unusual quartet of solo instruments (2 violins, viola and double bass) with an orchestral accompaniment. Two Divertimenti, written when Mozart was only 16 years old, complete the evening's program.

"Many people are familiar with Mozart's music, yet most have yet to hear Mozart performed on period accurate instruments," says Antoine Plante, Artistic Director for Mercury Baroque. "Our historically inspired approach brings a freshness and vitality to Mozart that all will enjoy."

Accessibility for the community has always been an important part of Mercury Baroque's mission. Free performances like Mercury's annual performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre are an important venue for introducing new audiences to classical music in an affordable and family-friendly setting. Last season's free performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre drew record breaking crowds for Mercury Baroque with over 4,000 people in attendance.

Now in its 11th Season, Mercury Baroque has charmed audiences and critics the world over with its passionate and exciting performances of Baroque music on period accurate instruments. Mercury Baroque performs a subscription series of concerts in downtown Houston, other Houston-area communities and tours both domestically and internationally. Last season Mercury Baroque made its European debut with five critically acclaimed performances of Lully's opera Armide in Paris. In addition to frequent performances, Mercury Baroque is also dedicated to educating future audiences and training the city's future musicians. Mercury's educational outreach programs have reached more than 10,000 children in the past 5 years alone.
