The Classical Theatre Company's (CTC) first production of their 2012-2013 Main Stage Season as well as the company's first production in their new performance venue and first home, Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, will be Miss Julie by August Strindberg. The production runs three weeks from September 26th-October 14th 2012. In honor of the 100th anniversary of August Strindberg's death CTC is proud to be producing the author's Miss Julie.
Miss Julie by August Strindberg will be directed by Julia Traber. The cast features Jennifer Dean as Miss Julie, David Matranga as Jean and Michelle Harper as Christine.
Considered by many to be Strindberg's seminal work, Miss Julie follows an evening in the life of Miss Julie, a young aristocratic woman, as she mingles with the servants on her father's estate. An elaborate game of cat and mouse follows as she torments and toys with her handsome footman, Jean. Strindberg masterfully shifts power back and forth between the sexes and the classes as Jean and Miss Julie tussle for the upper hand in love and power. Strindberg's words are simultaneously able to paint the elation of romance and the darkest aspects of human nature within the same interactions. The evening reaches a startling climax, the ramifications of which speak directly to the very topical notion of class warfare, and what that term truly means. The inclusion of Strindberg in CTC's season completes the trinity of early modern dramatists for this young company. CTC's other early modern authors have included Anton Chekhov and Henrik Ibsen. These forefathers, Strindberg included, are generally given credit for laying the groundwork upon which 20th Century drama falls.
