Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center is competing for the first time at AACTFest with Encore Players' production of Approaching Lavendar by Julie Beckett Crutcher. The competition is this weekend in Beaumont, TX.

Texas AACTFest is the state level festival for the American Association of Community Theatres in Texas that go on to compete in regional festivals, and ultimately a national festival for theatrical excellence. National winners compete in the International Amateur Theatre Festival, started by Princess Grace of Monaco in the 1960s.

Approaching Lavendar, directed by Gregory Magyar, is a one-act comedic drama about siblings' shared tolerance at their parents' remarriage, as a new understanding and forgiveness ultimately reveals the significance of sisterhood. The talented cast of local female actresses includes Grace Glass as Jennifer, Amanda Mena as Abigail and Kristin McKenzie as Wren.

Director Gregory Magyar said, "We chose Approaching Lavendar as our festival entry because it is the kind of play that places such strong focus on the character relationships. Julie Beckett Crutcher has written a piece that explores the meaning of sisterhood in both a traditional and non-traditional sense. In this age, where the word 'family' can be defined in so many different ways, Approaching Lavendar is an extremely relevant, relatable piece of theatre."
