Horse Head Presents Pulitzer Prize Winning Drama THE FLICK Image

Horse Head Theatre Co. (HH) is proud to complete our 9th Season with the regional premiere of Annie Baker's Pulitzer, Obie, and Susan Smith Blackburn winning play The Flick at Houston Warehouse Studios (1506 Lorraine St, Houston, TX 77009) from November 30 - December 15, 2018 directed by HH Artistic Director Jacey Little.

In a run-down movie theater on the brink of folding, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.

Playwright Annie Baker is quietly subversive in her take on classic character studies. She wants us to know that while this play is all about people, they aren't the people we usually see in plays -- or in films. The Flick follows ROSE (Avery Padilla), SAM (Greg Cote), and AVERY (Antonio Lasanta) -- characters Baker calls "three of the great 'Others' of American cinema, all of them victim to extreme stereotypes." The individual struggles of being black, poor, and female play out against the glittering background of Hollywood film. "I wanted these people to be quietly (maybe even unconsciously) fighting against their respective pigeonholes. And I also grew up knowing lower-middle-class Jews, hyper-educated black people, and women who wear baggy clothes and no makeup, and yet it is so rare to encounter any of those people in plays and movies. It feels like those people are like forced to wander outside of and on the periphery of plays and movies. So I literalized that - they're like cleaning up everyone else's crap AFTER the movie is over."

Since The Flick's first production five years ago at Playwrights' Horizon, it's hard to believe that Annie Baker's 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning hit has not yet graced Houston stages. To tell this story, Horse Head will return to their 2017 Sonic Life of a Giant Tortoise venue, Houston Warehouse Studios. Established in 2016 by native Houstonian Enrique Corona, the nearly 100 year-old building is located in the historic Near Northside Neighborhood and is primarily utilized by local photographers. The textures of this maintained yet rustic building will lend themselves beautifully to scenic designer Torsten Louis's vision of a naturalistic mom and pop movie theater down on it's luck, further elevated by costume designer Clair Hummel's expert design.

The Flick is recommended for ages 13+ for mature themes. Persons under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult.

$20 General Admission; $15 Student; $45 BAMF Donation & Reserved Seating.

Concessions generously sponsored by Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co.

The Flick is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

Horse Head Theatre Co. is a proud participant in the Capacity Building Initiative Incubator Programing funded by City of Houston though Houston Arts Alliance.
