Generations, A Theatre Company's SWEENEY TODD to Slay the Stage, 7/5-28

Generations, A Theatre Company's 5th Season features a re-imagining of one of the American Theatre's greatest masterpieces, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim -Libretto by Hugh Wheeler - based on the play by Christopher Bond. Since it first debuted on Broadway in 1979 this garish "musical thriller" has delighted audiences all over the world. Generations' Artistic Director George Brock promises that the show, produced in association with Rice University's Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts and opening July 5th, 2013 at Hamman Hall, will offer a different look at this timeless tale of obsession and revenge.
"I've always been curious about what happened after the story was finished in the same way I've always been curious as to what happens after Hamlet is finished," said Brock. "That was the jumping off point for this conceptualization." Set in the common room of a Victorian asylum and influenced by Peter Weiss' Marat/Sade, this "Todd" offers audiences a new staging that features the inmates of the fictional Asylum portraying the characters in the story. "So what we get is a play within a play which allows the audience to step back and look at this sordid tale from a completely different point of view," Brock said.
Generations, A Theatre Company was founded in 2008 with the intention of bringing theatre professionals together with aspiring theatre artists to create a synergy that provides invaluable training for the apprentices. Working in association with Rice University's Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts the company has produced Regional Premieres (Spring Awakening & Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) as well as re-imagined classics (Our Town & Bat Boy).
