Musiqa's 2013-14 Season Features New Music, New Venues and New Collaborations

Major Concert Series Offers New Venues
Time Travel, September 28, 2013
Breaking out of the concert hall environment for its opening concert, Musiqa offers an exciting program on Saturday, September 28th at 7:30 p.m. in Houston's downtown Market Square Park. In collaboration with Houston Downtown Management District, Musiqa celebrates the installation of the Public Art piece, "What Time Is It?" created by Jo Ann Fleischhauer with original music composed by Musiqa's Anthony Brandt and Chapman Welch.
Following the first sounds of Brandt and Welch's electronic composition "C O'Clock" from the historic Louis and Annie Friedman Clock Tower, Musiqa offers "Time Travel," featuring the works of Musiqa composer RoB Smith, along with vibrant new works that view the world from unique and unusual perspectives by iconic and internationally renowned composers, Louis Andriessen and John Corigliano; as well as several young composers who are receiving significant exposure internationally, Michel van der Aa, Missy Mazzoli and Bill Ryan. This free concert in the park invites audiences of all ages to picnic and experience this unique chamber music offering.
Frozen Time, January 11, 2014
Continuing its venture into new spaces, Musiqa will offer "Frozen Time," on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. at Asia Society Texas Center (The Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater).Combining the "Frozen Time" theme with the premiere of Musiqa composer Marcus Karl Maroney's Fotofest inspired work is a natural. Photographs are, in essence, frozen moments in time. The program will include two world premieres by Musiqa composers (Karim Al-Zand, Marcus Maroney), as well as three works by Asian composers (Karen Tanaka, Lei Liang and Elena Firsova). Featured on the program will also be poetry by University of Houston nationally recognized author and poet, Nick Flynn.
Time in Motion, March 22, 2014
Partnering with Houston's groundbreaking modern Dance Company, NobleMotion Dance, Musiqa returns to Hobby Center's Zilkha Hall on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at7:30 p.m. for the close of its major concert season with a premiere work by RoB Smith as well as a piece by Musiqa composer Pierre Jalbert. Houston Cinema Arts Society will be featured on the program as well.

Loft Concerts at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
Musiqa celebrates its tenth season of Loft Performances at CAMH with offeringsNovember 7, 2013, and January 30 and February 27, 2014. These three concerts will be grouped under the title "Music Outside the Lines." The Museum's rotating exhibition examines the development of abstraction. Musiqa will explore the concept of "abstraction" in music.
Education Programs for Elementary and Middle Schools
A vital part of Musiqa's annual programming is its participation in Hobby Center's Discovery Series where it will offer school day performances of "Around the World with Musiqa," October 22-25, 2013, and its unique program for middle school audiences, "Musiqa ReMix," December 5 & 6, 2013. These programs have been supported by National Endowment for the Arts for seven consecutive years.
