DiverseWorks, a non-profit arts center in Houston, has announced several events for January and February.  All events are held at 1117 E. Freeway Houston, Texas 77002. For more information, please visit their official website.

Parody of Light, by Patricia Hernandez, challenges the business practices of America's most collected artist, Thomas Kinkade: Painter of Light. Within an installation that includes the interior of a home and shopping mall, Patricia Hernandez critiques Kinkade's practice of digitally reproducing images on questionably "collectible" objects while restricting the sale of his original paintings. This exhibit is open January 14-February 26, 2011.  The opening reception will be held January 14, 6-9 p.m.

Playing off Parody of Light is flickerlounge, a serieis of short films by John Herschend, Ben Peters and Lily Sparks.  These videos parody art, media and religion through ironic viewpoints about television personalities and notions of success. Featuring John Herschend, Ben Peters and Lily Sparks.  flickerlounge runs January 14-February 26, 2011.  The opening reception is January 14, 6-9 p.m.

Grandalism, curated by Gonzo247 and featuring Asiaoner, is a season-long series of street art commissions presented in partnership with Gonzo247, founder of Aerosol Warfare. Throughout the season, the DiverseWorks dock will be the backdrop for a series of rotating, large-scale works by some of Houston's most accomplished street artists. Featuring a different artist every 8 weeks, Grandalism showcases the raw talent and innovation of the city's freshest and most prolific urban artists selected by one of H-town's most notable street art legends.  Grandalism also runs January 14-February 26, 2011 with an opening reception January 14, 6-9 p.m.

Former Artist Board members and fixtures of the 90s Houston art scene, Kelli Scott Kelley and Bill Kelley return to the DiverseWorks stage for a multimedia event, titled Edge of the Earth. This exhibit features The Incense Merchants, world-class cellist Dennis Parker, poetry by Jacqueline Dee Parker and the Houston premiere screening of Kelli Scott Kelley's Bird and Squirrel.

Edge of the Earth coincides with and follows the opening reception of Kelli Scott Kelley's Fairytale solo exhibition of mixed-media works at Hooks-Epstein Gallery.  This event takes place January 15, 2011 at 9 p.m.

After an action packed weekend of art openings and performances, kick back at DiverseWorks for Industry Night. If you are an artist, work in the art community or want to meet other people in the industry, join us for happy hour. Bring your business card, or DiverseWorks Membership card to receive exclusive drink specials for those in the biz. Industry Night will be January 25, 6-8 p.m.
