ZACH Theatre is proud to announce the cast for the Pulitzer and Tony Award®-winning musical, Sunday in the Park with George. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, Sunday in the Park with George plays ZACH's Topfer Stage from May 30-June 24, 2018 under the direction of Producing Artistic Director Dave Steakley with musical direction by Allen Robertson.
As the first fully produced Sondheim piece at ZACH Theatre, Dave Steakley explains why he's excited to bring Sunday in the Park with George to life on the Topfer Stage, "'White. A blank page or canvas...' are the opening lyrics sung by Georges Seurat in Sunday in the Park. In our production, we will tell this story the way that theatre artists embark on a creative process, which is to start with a bare stage - the Topfer will be a fully exposed playing space where we see each creative design element made in front of us. The orchestra will be on stage because I want the audience to visually experience the way composer Stephen Sondheim sonically paints with his musical score. And Cecil Washington, Jr., who plays Georges, will be painting amongst the orchestra the way a conductor 'paints' with his baton, cueing in each section of musicians."
The cast includes CECIL WASHINGTON, JR. as George/Georges; Jill Blackwood as Dot/Marie; JANIS STINSON as Old Lady/Blair Daniels; JAMIE GOODWIN as Jules/Bob Greenberg; AMY DOWNING as Yvonne/Naomi Eisen; MATTHEW TREVI?O as Boatman/Charles Redmond; SARAH MARIE CURRY as Celeste #1/Photographer; AMANDA CLIFTON as Celeste #2/Elaine; Tyler Jones as Franz/Dennis; Lara Wright as Frieda/Betty/Young Man; CONNOR BARR as Soldier #1/Alex/Bather; Paul Sanchez as Louis/Billy Webster; Amber Quick as Mrs./Nurse/Harriet Pawling; Brian Coughlin as Mr./Lee Randolph; J. DYLAN GIBSONas Soldier #2/Photographer; BLAKENEY MAHLSTEDT and MARIELA DENSON as Louise; and BRUCE BOWEN and LOGAN MARCUM as Bather Boy.
Directed by Dave Steakley the production team also includes ALLEN ROBERTSON as Musical Director, Cliff Simon as Scenic Designer, STEPHANIE BUSING asProjection Designer, Susan Branch TOWNE as Costume Designer, SERRET JENSEN as Hair and Makeup Designer, Sarah Maines as Lighting Designer with CRAIG BROCK as Sound Designer, SCOTT GROH as Properties Designer, and CATHERINE ANNE TUCKER as Stage Manager.
Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical masterpiece is a living painting by artist Georges Seurat, and centers on the artist as he discovers unimaginable possibilities while creating an enduring work of art. Seurat, known for juxtaposing points of multi-colored paint to allow the viewer's eye to blend the colors, connects the dots that make life so passionate, unexpected, heartbreaking, and ultimately rapturous. The live, onstage orchestra brings the radiant score about the art of making art - and love - soaring to brilliant life with "tension, composition, balance, light, and harmony." The gift of this musical is that the people who are the most different from us, may be the persons who illuminate ourselves to ourselves, and hold the key to our heart.
