The Broadway Performing Arts Studio will present the musical Spring Awakening at The MATCH in Midtown Houston, running for four performances only on December 8th-10th, 2017.
The musical is written in a pop/rock style score by Duncan Sheik, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Spring Awakening is the winner of eight Tony Awards and was adapted from the controversial play by Frank Wedekind. This musical is Rated PG-13 for adult material including violence, sexuality, adult language and is not suitable for children.
Set in a provincial German town in the late 19th century, this coming of age story follows a group of adolescents on their provocative journey of exploration into adulthood. The characters struggle to discover who they truly are while dealing with extremely difficult issues including sexuality, child abuse, rape and suicide. Facing the wonder and devastation of self-exploration, the adolescents are faced with parents and authority figures who try to oppress their desires and thoughts through the use of religion, education and withholding of information. In turn, the adolescents suffer the consequences of the adults' actions. These issues still ring true in today's society.
Directed by Relana Gerami-Luss with music Direction by Benjamin K. Luss, this production is staged with an All-Star cast of Houston's finest teen actors and adults including Carson Zoch as Melchior Gabor and Juliette Draper as Wendla Bergman, Cameron Mills (Moritz Steifel), Elizabeth Tietz (Ilse), Rachel Goodwin (Martha), Paco Medina (Hanschen), Samantha Lank (Thea), Alex Kerry (Ernst), Ben Hallam (Georg), Anthony Renteria (Otto), and Virginia Colmenares, Josephine Dodd, Madison Gonzalez, Amber Huchton, Azia Miranda, Kate Spence and Phil Swaney along with Brandon Hobratschk (Adult Male) and Relana Gerami-Luss (Adult Female) to round out the cast.
