Shout out to Generation Y: Black Lab Theatre has your back with a new season celebrating the coming of age in the new millennium. Black Lab Theatre's 2013-2014 season kicks off this fall with the razor-sharp, Off-Broadway comedy Assistance by Leslye Headland, a scathing look at megabuck corporate office politics through the hilariously ambition-driven eyes of Generation-Y staffers. Black Lab's regional premiere of Assistance comes just ahead of the play's much anticipated TV adaptation starring Krysten Ritter and Alfred Molina to be produced for NBC by Will Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions with the play's author, Leslye Headland signed on to scribe. Headland wrote Assistance (Greed) as part of her "Seven Deadly Sins" series, and comes on the heels of Bachelorette, another hit play in the series that recently received a feature film release in 2012 staring Kirsten Dunst. Assistance will run at Wildfish Theater in the Galleria Area September 19 through Oct 5 at 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays plus a Monday Industry Night on Sept 30.
The Black Lab season then continues into winter with the Houston premiere of Amy Herzog's poignant drama 4000 Miles. The winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play and the 2012 Lucile Lortel Award, 4000 Miles was also named TIME magazine's #1 Play of 2012 and was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This touching and humorous story follows Leo, a twenty something year old college drop out who shows up unexpectedly at his feisty grandmother's New York City apartment after an unexpected detour on his cross country bicycle trip. Over the course of a single month, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder, and ultimately console each other in a poignant comedic tale of familial love and grief.
"Our upcoming season is celebrating the diverse experiences of generation Y," notes Jordan Jaffe, Black Lab Theatre artistic director whose 2012-2013 season was praised for welcoming "challenging and pertinent productions" to Houston. "Everyone knows someone who is either crashing on a friend's couch unable to find work or planning their way from receptionist to billionaire in one job change. Our 2013-2014 season will speak to this generational trend." Adds Jaffe, "Whether you are a parent or grandparent of a Generation Y-er or living it yourself, these plays will hit home." A third production will be announced later in the year.
Founded in 2011 by Rice University graduate Jordan Jaffe, Black Lab Theatre focuses on bringing newer, socially conscious shows to audiences in fresh and innovative ways. For more information, please contact artistic director Jordan Jaffe at 713-417-3552.
