As I stood outside the Revention Music Center in downtown Houston on Thursday night with a growing line of die-hard, enthusiastic Just Dance fans, I did not know what to expect when I walked through the doors. Having played Just Dance for the first time back in my middle school days, I was intrigued by this live event that would bring the memories of my favorite dances, characters, and songs to a stage right in front of me. What welcomed us as we walked in the doors was a completely transformed world where Just Dance, the number one music video game franchise by Ubisoft, had truly come to life before us.
Just Dance Live is a multi-faceted immersive, interactive experience that brings all the most colorful, memorable, and eye-catching elements of the video game to life, just mere feet away from you. The thrilling experience begins with a red carpet lined with recognizable Just Dance characters that leads to the pre-show Get Ready For It Zone.
This pre-show event had everything kids, teens, and adults alike can enjoy in order to prepare themselves for the main event. Complete with Just Dance tournaments, makeup artists, trivia games, food and (adult) beverages, and chances to mingle with the characters of Just Dance, this pre-show event got everyone psyched up for the highly anticipated main event. An electrifying transition from the world of downtown Houston into the iconic world of Just Dance, you could feel the anticipation fly high as the doors for the main event opened.
With sixteen incredible dancers, four stages, and a series of popular, fan-favorite songs from the game -- such as "Applause" by Lady Gaga, "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)" by Ylvis, and "California Gurls" by Katy Perry -- the dancers and crew kept the audience constantly entertained with favorite songs, dance competitions between groups of audience members, and interactive moments where the dancers themselves stepped offstage and made their way through the crowd of dancing fans.
The dancers of Just Dance Live had an immense task ahead of them, with countless dance numbers, over eighty costumes to change in and out of, and what I imagine to be quick transformations from character to character. The dance professionals were fantastic all throughout the entire experience, keeping the energy high and the audience on their toes during the 90-minute performance.
Perhaps the best element of this immersive experience was the focus on audience involvement: seeing Just Dancers bond with other Just Dancers, watching toddlers, children, teens, and adults alike dancing like they were in their living room playing the video game, and seeing how excited the audience was to dance along with their favorite characters come to life.
This explosive several-part event is a never seen before form of entertainment, where every member of a family can be thrilled to dance along with a real-life version of the iconic game found in living rooms across the world.
