Bayou City Theatrics continues along their path of "Art from New Perspectives," by bringing you a breath of fresh air and reimagining an entire season of Broadway's most beloved musicals. The 2015 Spring Season will open with Stephen Sondheim's first Broadway musical, of which he penned both music and lyrics: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This hilarious production runs tonight, February 13 through March 1 at The Kaleidoscope.

Premiering in 1962, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is given an imaginative update by the Bayou City Theatrics creative team. This new production takes a modern approach to casting, design, and delivery of the material while still maintaining every note and lyric from Sondheim's original score, and every word from the hilarious book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gilbert.

This uproarious production promises to evoke the nostalgic joy associated with ...Forum, all the while packing a punch of new surprises and discoveries.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes place in Ancient Rome and centers around Pseudolus (Whitney Zangarine), a slave, and his desire to be free. Hatching a plot, Pseudolus promises his master, Hero (Luke Hamilton), that the beautiful courtesan in the window next door will be his, in exchange for his freedom. After discovering that the virginal courtesan, Philia (Nicole Norton-Slatnick), is contracted to the great Captain Miles Gloriosus (Jayson Kolbicz), the plot thickens as Pseudolus stops at nothing to be freed. Using nearly every comedic vehicle known to man, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes its audience on a roller-coaster ride of gut-busting laughs and plot twists.

Bayou City Theatrics' production features a stellar cast of local professionals including Will Ledesma as Senex, Hero's father, Kelly Waguespack as Hero's Mother, Domina, Colton Berry as Slave-in-Chief, Hysterium, Laz Estrada as Marcus Lycus, the buyer and seller of beautiful women, and Trevor Grace as Erronius, a befuddled old man. Wearing various hats as the "stooges-style" trio of Proteans are Tori Shoemaker, Megan Vaughn and Ashlee Zoch. As the vivacious courtesans: Michelle Mayo (Tintinabula), Ashley Carfine (Panacea), Jessica Rohe (Vibrata), and Christa Ruiz (Gymnasia).

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is directed and designed by Colton Berry with choreography by Luke Hamilton and music direction by Jane Volke. The production runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 5:00 p.m., February 13 through March 1, at Bayou City Theatrics' downtown theatre, The Kaleidoscope (705 Main Street at Capitol, Suite B). Tickets ($35-$40) are available at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com as well as at the door, although BCT encourages purchasing tickets in advance to secure seating in their intimate venue. Convenient cash parking is located less than one block away at the corner of Capitol & Fannin, in the SAKS' garage.
