A.D. Players at The George, one of Houston's largest resident theatre companies, will revive Neil Simon's imaginative play, "God's Favorite," at The George from Friday, July 13 - Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018, with preview nights July 11-12. "God's Favorite" is a contemporary, humorous tale of the Book of Job with a hint of the Prodigal Son, that explores the challenges and rewards of morality.
First released on Broadway in 1974, the play tells the story of Joe Benjamin, a devout, God-fearing business tycoon who lives comfortably with his family on Long Island. One night, they receive a visit from Sidney Lipton, claiming to be a messenger of God, who resolves to get Joe to renounce God through a variety of temptations and afflictions. While Joe's commitment is challenged, audiences are left with laughs and feelings of encouragement as the story unfolds through inventive storytelling and enhanced design.
"'God's Favorite' was very well received when we first produced it in 2004, and we've now created an even more dramatically designed experience at The George," said Interim Artistic Director Kevin Dean. "It's our hope that this story, replete with tests of an unshakable faith, will resonate deeply with audiences and leave them with the encouragement to tackle life's inevitable trials."
"God's Favorite" is directed by Braden Hunt and stars Craig Griffin as Joe Benjamin, Deborah Hope as his wife, Rose Benjamin and Chip Simmons as Sidney Lipton. Scenic, sound, costume and light design are overseen by Liz Freese, Orlando Arriaga, Danielle Hodgins and Thomas Murphy, respectively.
Tickets are priced at $20-70, and can be purchased online or via The George Theater Box Office at (713) 526-2721.
