A. D. Players, Houston's only professional Christian theater company, is pleased to announce five mainstage and four children's Theater Productions for 2017-2018, the Company's first full season in the new 440-seat Jeannette and L.M. George Theater in Uptown Houston.
Mainstage productions will include Harvey, Mary Chase's 1944 Pulitzer Prize- winning comedy about an imaginary, 6'3" rabbit; Barbara Robinson's delightful The Best Christmas Pageant Ever from the young adult novel by the same name; Best of Enemies, a true story of the unlikely relationship forged between a Ku Klux Klan leader and a civil rights activist; Lilies of the Field, the story of a traveling handyman convinced to build a chapel for a small band of immigrant nuns; and God's Favorite, Neil Simon's hilarious, contemporary comedy reimagining the biblical man of woe, Job.
Children's productions slated for 2017-2018 are Balloonacy, a young audiences' favorite, showcasing the joys of imagination and friendship; Rock Nativity, a pop-rock retelling of the Christmas story for the whole family; Madeleine L'Engle's fantastic tale A Wrinkle in Time, with STEM-friendly heroine Meg proving the power of love over evil; and David, the Best Slinger in the West, a wild west retelling of the confrontation between shepherd boy David and the giant Goliath.
The Players will also present a special, limited run of Jeannette Clift George's classic John, His Story commemorating the Easter season.
"We are delighted to announce this first full season of shows in the George Theater," says Jeannette Clift George, founder of the A. D. Players. "Our venue has changed, but our mission has not: the stories we tell from the stage, our teaching and training, our presence in the community - all of the work we do is communicated and offered under the creative signature of God."
All shows will be performed in the new, 440-seat Jeannette and L.M. George Theater, 5420 Westheimer Road, the A. D. Players state-of-the-art performance venue that opened its doors in early 2017. The A. D. Players became an Actors' Equity Association (AEA) theater in 2017.
