4th Wall Theatre opens its eighth season with the play that the NY Times recently named one of the 25 most important American plays written since ANGELS IN AMERICA: JESUS HOPPED THE 'A' TRAIN by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis. JESUS HOPPED THE 'A' TRAIN arrives at 4th Wall Theatre Company on the heels of the Signature Theatre revival unanimously raved by critics with multiple sold out extensions.
Winner of the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Revival, JESUS HOPPED THE 'A' TRAIN tells the story of Angel Cruz, a bike messenger from New York City who is awaiting trial in Rikers Island prison for shooting the leader of a religious cult in the "ass". He is on his knees, alone and terrified, trying to say a prayer he no longer remembers to a God he has all but forgotten. Angel's court appointed attorney, Mary Hanrahan, is lucky if she can keep her client's names straight. His guards are indifferent. Worse, Angel is subject to repeated inmate brutality, landing him in protective custody, where he finds himself in the company of a charismatic serial killer named Lucius Jenkins, a born-again believer who will change the course of Angel's life forever.
Known for strong ensembles, 4th Wall has once again assembled a powerhouse of performers, led by guest artist, Mateo Mpinduzi-Mott as Angel Cruz. Mateo currently resides in Los Angeles but is no stranger to his native Houston, most recently having performed at Catastrophic Theatre in LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR. The cast also includes Christy Watkins (Houston Press Best Actress award winner for THE MIRACLE WORKER); Joe Palmore (seen in 4th Wall's 2017 Houston Press Best Play Award Winner, LOBBY HERO); Santry Rush (Houston Press Best Actor nominee for his performance in 4th Wall's THE GOOD THIEF); and Orlando Arriaga (4th Wall debut - most recently seen in LILLIES OF THE FIELD at AD Players.) The production will be directed by 4th Wall Co-Founder, Kim Tobin-Lehl (Houston Press 2017 Best Director Winner for TRUE WEST by Sam Shepard, Co-Director for Houston Press Best Play Winner of 2017 LOBBY HERO by Kenneth Lonergan.) 4th Wall could not be more excited to bring this multi-award winning and socially relevant play to Houston.
