Director Eric Johnson said HTY was inspired to co-commission the play as part of its 2016-17 season, which is themed "Stories of Home," as a way to spark discussion on the impact of global warming on island nations. Playwright Kruckemeyer is a resident of Tasmania, an island community similar to Hawaii in that it has a relationship to a "mainland" culture (Australia) as we do with the mainland U.S. The play poses the question, "What happens when an island springs a leak and can no longer float on the open sea?" Johnson added, "It's an extraordinarily thoughtful and poetic tale that asks pressing questions about what might happen when an island's people are forced to change, and tells the story of one girl's heroic journey to save her people's lives and spirits."
The cast is Sean-Joseph Choo, Jim Davenport, Maile Holck, Junior Tesoro and Christina Uyeno. Co-directors are Eric Johnson and Nathaniel Niemi; scenic/prop design is by Jim Davenport; lighting design is by Chesley Cannon; sound design is by Sean-Joseph Choo; costume design is by Kathleen Doyle.
