The Purple Mai?a Foundation has received a cash grant from IBM to support their technology education programs. The three-year- old nonprofit runs eight after-school and in-school coding and computer science classes at various sites on O?ahu and L?na?i.
"We've been impressed with Purple Mai?a's innovative projects targeting underserved communities and consider it a worthwhile endeavor for IBM to support" said IBM Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs Manager Mark Stefanos. He added that, "IBM is interested in continuing to support the foundation's programs through our Impact Awards program."
Purple Mai?a uses a combination of self-paced instructional videos, gamified learning tools, Hawaiian culture, and project-based lessons to teach coding and computer science in a way that is empowering for students and welcoming for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, local students, and girls, according to Purple Mai?a Coordinator Kelsey Amos.
The nonprofit also offers monthly introductory weekend workshops for interested schools, and is the organizer for the Purple Prize.
