An enchanting musical about the boy captured by the wicked Snow Queen and the girl who must brave the frozen wilderness to save him before his heart turns to ice.

Based on the tale
by Hans Christian Andersen

Adaptation by Hester Kamin Original score by Tanya Kirk

This original production is based on Hans Christian Andersen's enchanting tale about the boy captured by the wicked Snow Queen and the little girl who must rescue him before his heart turns to ice. With book by Hester Kamin, music and lyrics by Tanya Kirk, and co-directed by Eden-Lee Murray and Deanna Luster, this new musical version of the beloved story is appropriate for grades K-8, but grown-ups will be captivated by this delightful production, too!

It features a top-notch cast, including multiple Po‘okela Award-winner Eden-Lee Murray in dual roles as the Snow Queen and Grandmother; and local audience favorites Stephanie Conching and Jason Kanda playing the two central characters, Gerda and Kay.

The multi-generational ensemble also includes Stephanie Kong, Megan Mount, Elitei Tatafu Jr., Paul Mitri and his daughter, Anika. Members of HTC's Hawaii Young Actors Ensemble are cast as "minjas," non-speaking characters who serve as the Snow Queen's ninja/minions.

The visually stunning production boasts multiple award-winning designers, with Lloyd "Sandy" Riford creating sets and lights, and Peggy Krock designing costumes.

"We're aiming for a combination of playful visual fantasy and a taste of authentic Danish culture so that our young audiences will come away with a sense of the source country of this beloved tale," says director/actor and HTC Education Director Eden-Lee Murray.

The Hawaii Theatre Student Matinee Series is made possible by the generosity of The Atherton Family Foundation, The Breztlaff Foundation, The First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, The Thomas J. Long Foundation, Macy's Foundation, The McInerny Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act), Visitor Industry Charity Walk, and the G.N. Wilcox Foundation.
