The Hawaii Shakespeare Festival (HSF) returns to The ARTS at Marks Garage in the center of the vibrant downtown arts district for its twelfth season. For over a decade, the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival has been presenting three Shakespeare plays each year without repeating in its quest to produce all of Shakespeare's plays for Hawaii. At the conclusion of this season, HSF will join the ranks of the few festivals worldwide that have completed the canon. The season includes Troilus and Cressida, opening July 19; Timon of Athens, opening August 9; and As You Like It, opening August 23. Each play runs two weekends. Free companion lectures are offered for each play.
The 2013 season starts with Troilus and Cressida, Shakespeare's bitterly comic take on the Trojan War. Troilus and Cressida is directed by festival co-founder R. Kevin Garcia Doyle and stars HSF veterans Alvin Chan as Troilus, Lacey Perrine Chu as Cressida, Q as Ulysses, Moses Goods as Achilles, and Jonathan Clarke Sypert as Hector.
The season continues with Timon of Athens, a harrowing tale of heartbreak and near-redemption. This production features gender-blind casting, and is co-directed by Tony Pisculli and Eleanor Svaton, and stars HSF veterans Shawn A. Thomsen as Timon, Stephanie Keiko Kong as Alcibiades, Joe Abraham as Apemantus with newcomer Victoria Brown-Wilson as Flavius.
The festival concludes with As You Like It, the popular sylvan comedy of love and marriage. As You Like It is directed by Taurie Kinoshita and stars Nai`a Aguirre as Rosalind, Patrick A. Karjala as Orlando, joined by professional English actor Owen Bleach as Jaques.
Companion lectures by Brenda Machosky, Assistant Professor of English at U.H. West Oahu, will present background information on the plays and highlight aspects of the HSF productions to watch for in performance. The lectures are offered at The ARTS at Marks Garage at 6:30pm on Saturday of closing weekend for each show, and are free and open to the public.
