Ballet Hawaii begins its 42nd season this summer with performances of The Sleeping Beauty featuring International Artists from Kansas City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. Combining forces with Kansas City Ballet, Ballet Hawaii welcomes Artistic Director Devon Carney who has choreographed Tchaikovsky's renowned fairy tale. Performances are scheduled at Blaisdell Concert Hall Friday through Sunday, August 4, 5 and 6.
Perhaps the most beloved ballet fairy tale of all time, The Sleeping Beauty is a sumptuous production that brings to life the enchanting story of Princess Aurora. The evil Carabosse attempts to bewitch the princess and her kingdom with her death but the benevolent Lilac Fairy places her in a deep and protective sleep instead - a decades-long slumber from which she can only be awakened by a kiss from her one true love. This romantic and tender story is told with glittering dances, vibrant characters and one of the most treasured grand pas de deux in all of ballet. The famous classical tale was first performed in 1890 St. Petersburg, Russia and has long been considered one of the world's most spectacular ballets. The full length ballet takes place in three acts and is set to the music of Peter I. Tchaikovsky.
Ballet Hawaii Artistic Director Pamela Taylor Tongg stated, "We are excited to present Devon Carney's full- length, complete rendering of this masterpiece. Continuing our tradition of outstanding performances this show will be a treat for the eyes with its' lavish costumes and scenery created by international designer Peter Farmer. Nationally recognized lighting director Trad A Burns will be creating the lighting and effects for the production."
