The lawyer Hary Stavropoulos has been appointed Chair of the Greek National Opera’s Board of Directors by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Mr Stavropoulos will be replacing Ms Venia Papathanasopoulou –who stepped down from the post for personal reasons– through until the end of the Board’s current term.

The internationally renowned Greek composer Yannis Markopoulos - best known to UK audiences for composing the chart-topping music for BBC television series Who Pays the Ferryman? - has died in Athens at the age of 84.

Macumba was born in Cyprus. This excellent band moves towards Latin Jazz and World Music directions and paths. The collaboration between Elias Ioannou (trumpet), Giorgos Morfitis (keyboard), Rodrigo Caceres (bass) and Rodos Panayiotou (drums) brings a new air to the music scene of the island.

Sea Gypsies are a three-piece blues fusion band with a repertoire of around sixty numbers which they perform in their own arrangements. The band consists of: Tammy Joe Stewart (guitar, vocals) Jim Williams (bass, vocals) and Dave Samwell (drums, cajon). They don’t just do blues covers but rearrange numbers completely.

On Tuesday, 7 March 2023, the renowned Canadian ballerina and choreographer Lynn Seymour –who served as Director of the Greek National Opera Ballet during its 2006/07 Season– passed away at the age of 84. Seymour took on the directorship of the Ballet on the invitation of the late, great GNO Artistic Director Stefanos Lazaridis.

The Greek National Opera (GNO) presents the Greek premiere of Sir David McVicar's production of Cherubini's Medea, led by GNO's conductor Philippe Auguin. The opera will be performed as a centerpiece of GNO's centennial tribute to Maria Callas.

The Greek National Opera (GNO) presents a revival of legendary Greek director Spyros Evengelatos' production of Massenet's Werther featuring leading mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili in her highly anticipated role debut as Charlotte, conducted by Jacques Lacombe in his GNO debut.

The GNO ballet is reprising its hugely successful production 3 ROOMS, in which GNO Ballet Director Konstantinos Rigos enters into creative discourse on contemporary movement vocabularies with two of the dance world’s leading lights – the great Czech choregrapher Jiří Kylián and the internationally acclaimed Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. 

It is announced that the premiere of the new chamber opera Strella is postponed for Wednesday 1 February 2023 due to technical reasons.

After a successful run of auditions, the Greek National Opera has announced the cast of the chamber opera Strella to music by Michalis Paraskakis and with a libretto by Alexandra K, based on on Panos H. Koutras’ film of the same title.

The much-anticipated new co-production of the National Opera with the Opéra La Monnaie of Brussels is The Tales of Hoffmann under the intelligent direction of the leading European director of opera and theater Krzysztof Warlikowski, who undertakes to reveal the essence of a work where place and time are the remains of a damaged mosaic. 

After a series of sold-out performances, the great success of the Alternative Stage of the National Opera Theater Cheap Cigarettes , a 'romantic operetta' in 34 scenes and 19 songs, comes to captivate the audience from December 4, 2022 and for 24 new performances until and January 5, 2023.
