The four-act Othello by Giuseppe Verdi follows the narrative of the eponymous Shakespearean masterpiece, delivering the story with music of explosive power and exemplary economy of means of expression. Othello's heroism, Iago's lime hatred, Dysdemona's purity and good faith are uniquely outlined through Verdi's composition. The uniquely accurate music spectacularly depicts the storm raging in the sea, but also especially the mental landscape of the central hero, who will be sunk from the pedestal of his glory, surrendered to the instinct of his jealousy. Verdi's penultimate opera was a huge success in its first performance in 1887 at La Scala in Milan and has since been in the repertoire of all lyric theaters and at the forefront of the public's preferences.
The case concerns the revenge of Iagos, who is a flag bearer in the service of Othello. Iagos hates Othello, the black ruler of Cyprus and general of the Republic of Venice, because he bypassed him and promoted Cassius. Iagos plots to convince Othello that Disdaimon's wife is cheating on him with Cassius. Othello falls into the trap and, blurred by jealousy, strangles Disdaimona. When the plot is revealed, Othello commits suicide.
