The popular classic fairytale by the brothers Grimm premières in a new, witty and cheeky version for the opera stage. A strong-willed princess, a dancing white rabbit, a beauty-obsessed stepmother and 77 small helpful dwarves are the protagonists in this fast-paced children's opera by the Uzbek-Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin.
Princess Snow White is sick of it: forever having to practise her calligraphy! She yearns for the big wide world, for adventure and a wealth of new experiences. Her vain stepmother, the queen who is practically obsessed by her own beauty, is not only completely lacking in empathy – even worse, she feels no tenderness whatsoever towards her stepdaughter. Luckily for Snow White, she has a trusty companion in the form of a slightly too-large rabbit named Richard III. Together, they manage to flee from the murderous queen. In the forest, they find a new home – and new tasks – with the 77 dwarves. Everything could be so wonderful if it weren't for the jealousy-ridden queen, whose stubborn magic mirror continues to rub her nose in the fact that »Snow White, who lives behind the seven hills with the 77 dwarves, is simply a thousand times more beautiful« ...
Following their collaboration on the Monteverdi Trilogy, the playwright Susanne Felicitas Wolf and the composer Elena Kats-Chernin have once again come together for this re-telling of the well-known fairytale of Snow White – their version is filled with humorous, pacy dialogues and many musical numbers with the potential to become hits. It is sometimes emotional and touches our hearts, at other times full of verve and spell-binding.
