Asmik Grigorian, a favourite with audiences as Rusalka and as Maria in Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa, once again takes the role of the unhappy water sprite who renounces her true nature because of her love for a human prince. Despite all warnings, Rusalka is determined to find out what it's like to be a human being – and she ends up paying a bitter price.
Barrie Kosky’s darkly romantic interpretation of the Czech fairytale material conjures up sensual, powerful images which followed the melancholy poetry of Dvo?ák’s music and irresistibly captivate the audience. “Moments of almost surreal beauty, with the action remaining – as appropriate for fairytales – equally poetic and mysterious”.
