United States President Barack Obama has had to defy gravity in more ways than one during his nearly two terms in office. Fortunately, a knockout performance by WICKED's Christine Dwyer helped remind the Commander In Chief that the nation's future is unlimited.
The President was in Hannover, Germany recently for the opening ceremony of the annual Hannover Messe, the world's largest industrial fair, where Dwyer's performance of the musical's first act closer "Defying Gravity" was a rousing highlight.
Dwyer joined the WICKED family in 2010 as an Elphaba understudy for the 2nd national tour and eventually graduated to the co-starring role. She's also had several stints in the Broadway company of WICKED as both standby and replacement.
The Broadway sensation, Wicked, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz...but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin-smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships...until the world decides to call one "good," and the other one "wicked." With a thrilling score that includes the hits "Defying Gravity," "Popular" and "For Good," Wicked has been hailed by The New York Times as "the defining musical of the decade," and Time Magazine says, "If every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place."
