The New York Times reports that The Badisches State Theater in Karlsruhe, Germany will stage a season directed entirely by women for the first season programmed by new playhouse director Anna Bergmann.
Bergmann is the first women to program a season for the state theatre at the venue which stages ballet, opera, and theatre.
In all, ten women directors will headline the upcoming season. The season aims to move German theatres into a more gender-balanced playing field following a study by the German Culture Council which found only 22% of theatres were run by women, and that male actors make, on average, a third more than the women they work alongside.
